I don’t know about you but I have asked this question many times and have been asked many times. “If you win the lotto would you continue to work?” I don’t mean a small amount of money but a really obnoxious amount. I can say without a shadow of a doubt I wouldn’t be doing the same kind of work that I do now. That money would mean freedom and that’s what I want. The 9-5 grind would be gone. I have heard some persons insisting that they would continue to work. I would ask them to why? What about you? Would you continue on the path that you are on now or go do something else?
Can you imagine not getting up in the morning to go work for someone else? I know some of you know about doing your own thing but the difference is you would not be in the daily hustle that forces you to keep going and going like the energizer bunny. It does make for a tiring life. However I know of many who would insist that work is the staff of life and even with tons of money they would never stop. I wasn’t suggesting that you stop working but I was thinking not doing it in the form that’s it’s in now. What do you think?
I have read and heard so many persons point out that when many persons stop working they spiral down and that is why when so many retire they die not long after if they have not planned for retirement. I have family and friends that have retired and seem to be busier than they were when “working”. They point out that it’s different. They are now doing in most cases what they want to do and it’s the freedom that they like having. There is no getting up at the crack of dawn to fight traffic to get to the office and praying for the end of the work day. Sounds familiar?
I wonder if it has to be like that even if you are in a job that you don’t like? What do you do to enjoy what you do no matter what. It’s all about the mindset. You have to decide that this job and the persons around you will not push you over the edge and have you living for the weekend or days off. It’s not the easiest thing to get to that place but it’s possible. See and accept the job and the people for what they are and lower you expectations to make it easier. Some will say lowering the expectations will mean lower your standards but it might not. Think about it and let me know what you think.
It’s taken me forever to feel freer than I did even two years ago and I think it happened because of Covid-19. During the heights of the pandemic I saw life spin and looked so different. The world slowed down and I saw it as it really was. I also slowed down and looked at my mortality and acknowledged it, what else could I do? Fighting it would have made no sense. It was not only your time that you had to look at but your finances and that we had to look at up close and personal. Did you like me really look and realize that we were spending on things that were not necessary? I’m trying not to go back to that place but you know lifestyle creep is a thing. The only way to overcome it is to beat it back or it will take over, it might happen slowly but it can happen easily.
When work is or becomes your life because it defines you what do you do? Do you step back and ensure it doesn’t or do we leave it and say que sera, sera. Why would you allow your work to define you? Is it about the money or is it about the control or is there something else? I’m not certain and that’s why I’m asking. Why does work end up defining us? Is it because of how society portray work and life? It’s as if without working you are not complete. Is it really about the work or the money? I have to think about this and get back to you. It’s more than just this I think. I know others have really delve deep into this subject but not me as I worked because I needed money. What would happen if I didn’t need the money? What would happen if you didn’t need the money would work mean anything at all to us?

Ha! Good one Andrea!:) I have often asked myself if I should win would I continue to work? I rarely play but..if…before being self- employed, I would say I would stop teaching and volunteer. Now that I’m self- employed, I would probably just reduce the number of clients I see to allow me to volunteer..although I do serve in a number of organizations, I would love to be able to do more..I would not be content doing nothing. I think it’s important to give back, & to also engage in leisure interests- still important to do something.
It’s the joy of giving I think that would have us give up leisure time to help others. Like you I would love to give back even more.
I won’t lie to you if I could stop getting up to go to work every day I would but how would I be able to eat? 🤔
I have concluded it’s about the money. Because if people are crooks but they are successful, they get respect. A YouTube influencer gets more respect than a teacher. It’s what the work gets us which is money. And the more the better regardless of the contribution we are or are not making.
You area so right. It’s all about the money.
