I’m sure you have heard the old adage “Don’t bite the hand that feed you.” When I saw it recently I thought about gratitude. Why would you bite the hand that feeds you? I am not only thinking about it in terms of the persons you might work with/for but also your family, friends and just everyone that might have an impact on your life, no matter how small. It’s interesting to make this statement and have someone say it’s an old fashioned way of thinking. But is it really? I don’t think of it in a subservient manner. It’s just saying treat persons with respect.

We have all complained about our jobs at some point in time (the ones of us that are employed by others). The thing is I can never understand why you would disrespect the person that employed you. Remember you went looking for the job. If you don’t want to be there leave, after all you are not a tree and therefore not rooted. If you don’t want to be there then you just have to find a way to leave. You have to take your time removing your hand out of the lion’s mouth. At the end of the day it’s their business and you are a clog in the wheel. What to do but look out for yourself. This doesn’t mean that you show disrespect. It’s their place. You know the ones that really upset me; the ones that steal from the persons that employ them. Yes they aren’t paying you as much as you might want, but why steal 🤦🏾‍♀️. All my life my mother always said don’t touch people’s money. It’s not because you might get caught but because it’s wrong on all levels. I have seen people steal from their employer and think they will never get caught. Well I am here to tell you that I have seen too many to count get caught in the end. Don’t take what is not yours.

In a similar fashion don’t take the friends and the family around you for granted. If you have people that really care then it’s great to reciprocate. Don’t treat them with disdain because they might step away. What happens then? I have seen so often that when they bite the hand that is held out to them in friendship it pulls back and they wonder why the same persons are not there anymore. When you show gratitude for them being there it’s like a positive loop filled with support and very often kindness. You all know how I feel about gratitude. It’s what makes the world go around and it’s just better for us all. I believe that persons that regularly practice gratitude receive benefits without even knowing. It improves your mental health, strength relationships, and it is said by some your physical health. Showing gratitude can be as simple as a smile, saying thank you, showing a small gesture of appreciation, or consistently showing respect and consideration. It’s important to show respect to all persons not just the ones that can “help” you. as my mother would say when I was growing up it doesn’t matter what the person does or the amount of money they have, treat all persons with respect.
