How do you eat an elephant? One piece at a time. I have always heard this and use it when I feel a bit overwhelmed. Trying to do everything at once has never worked. Breaking things into small pieces is a better option. Trust me that works better then insisting that you are multitasking. Multitasking is a myth. The human brain is not equipped to do that contrary to popular belief. The brain just switches from task to task, we are not computers. Alexa can do it with ease, me not at all. I might think so or you might feel that way but we can’t. This constant switch prevents me from getting into deep thinking. It can be frustrating but what to do? It’s how I have to work for now.
At the end of the day we have to take things at a day at a time. We plan for the future but know we must live in the present. What do we do if we keep living in the past or the future? We have to learn how to move to the present so as to take our lives to another level. No matter what happens you can only eat the elephant one piece at a time. It’s hard not actually just sitting and ruminating on the past or the future. We have to get to the state where this quote makes sense to us,
“Yesterday’s the past, tomorrow’s the future, but today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.”
– Bil Keane.
It’s really important for us to really take it a little at a time. We say it all the time but do we really do it? When overwhelmed it’s important to know that we should slow down and take it a little at a time. You would be surprised at how this helps. Don’t believe me try it. Slow down, being “busy” isn’t always the best thing. I know persons that no matter what they are always busy and only God to tell what they are doing. At the end of they day they have achieved nothing special as they never focus.

I agree Andrea! We get so caught up in the busyness of life, we fail to recognize and embrace the joys of the present- I have certainly learned to slow down, live in the moment…I do chunk projects into smaller task as you say, be intentional about blocking out the time to complete, and then tackle each task- chunk, block, tackle- I feel more accomplished.
You are so right we sometimes just are too “busy.”
It took me a while to learn all you pointed out. Do things a little at a time. What was surprising was that I was when I realized I was no longer overwhelmed. Still learning. 🙏🏽
