“Discomfort is the currency of growth. Every time you step out of your comfort zone, you expand it. Growth is rarely comfortable, but it’s always worth it.”

Recently my son’s principal suggested that I have him join the debate club. I immediately said to her that will push him way outside his comfort zone to which she replied, it will force him to grow. I thought about it for a few and nodded that it will do for sure I replied. If you know my youngest he won’t talk unless spoken to unless he’s very comfortable with you. He reminds me of myself at that age and apparently he also reminds my husband of himself at that age. Poor child, double dose of introversion.

Anyway, I thought about being pushed outside of our comfort zone when I saw this quote somewhere. “Growth begins at the edge of your comfort zone.” Imagine stepping into that space outside of what we think to be “normal”, it can be really unsettling. As humans we all want to be safe and secure. It’s not easy to move away from that security and push ourselves outside of the comfort zone that we know. Why would I want to be discomfortable, why trigger imposter syndrome? It’s hard to make that step when we can just stay in the same place and mark time.

My question is how far outside of our comfort zone do we go? Do we take small steps or should it be a great leap to get to that next step? Do we really have to have some level of discomfort in order to grow? I have seen where it is said that, “growth and comfort rarely coexist.” Do you agree?
