I remember someone saying out loud years ago that when they had finished university, that was the end of their learning. Maybe they meant to say the end of school for them, because as far as I’m concerned, learning is a lifelong process. I thought that it was strange because in my mind, one can never stop learning. Think about it: we are learning new things in this day and age as the changes around us are rampant. As you blink, it’s a new technology. If we don’t keep up, we get left behind. You can think, “ I really don’t need it,” but how will you understand what is happening?

Continual improvement

I remember many years ago when I felt as if I was on autopilot where my life was concerned. I was just going through the motions and threading water. I always felt as if things were at a standstill. I noticed that I was stagnant and had to analyze my situation. At the end of my analysis, I realized that I was regressing in so many ways because I wasn’t reading and watching anything informative. Informative for my mind, that is, I was focused on everything for my children and work. That’s when I knew if I continued like this, I would have massive regrets in the future. I remember saying to a friend that I felt as if my mind was not growing and even my vocabulary was regressing. You know the concept that if you don’t use it, you lose it.

I went back to school and did some post-grad work. I have never looked back and won’t allow myself to go back to that stage. I have to ensure that I feed my mind and my body. I take care of me in all spheres of my life: body, mind, and spirit. I read a lot because for me that’s the best way to learn. I know I don’t have to always learn from my own experiences but I learn a lot from the experiences of others. The persons don’t have to be physically in your orbit for you to garner anything from them. Reading I find is a fantastic way to learn and keep up with the world. You don’t need to do deep dives but ensure you learn all you can to keep your mind active.

How do you keep yourself growing? Do you even bother or are you like the person I mentioned? Do you just move with the tide or do you make sure you take control of your own life? Are you the type that think as we get older we should slow down and cut back on what we learn? Asking for a friend 😁. Let me know what you think; I really want to know, and I am sure others do too.
