“To thine own self be true.” – Hamlet (William Shakespeare)

For the life of me I can’t remember who said this last week but it prompted me to write a blog. I actually did Hamlet in school so the quote is nothing new. I can see my English Literature teacher in my mind’s eye emphasizing this quote and how important it is for us even outside of school. Of course at that point in my life it was just a quote and an adult talking gibberish. It was noted that although it’s a simple phase it carries tremendous weight. I think authenticity is one of the hallmarks of this quote. We have to be not only authentic but genuine and honest and guard our integrity jealously. When we are true to ourselves we are more confident and have a sense of peace.

In today’s world which is confusing and always connected it can feel as if the ability to be authentic and to be true to one’s self can be almost elusive. How are we able to remain grounded and ensure that know who we are and never forget? As I noted in my blog last week that perception and reality seem to be at war for some of us we realize that too often we don’t notice that what we think we see and the reality are two different things. Social media very often show us what reality is expected to look like. Just note it’s very often someone’s perception of reality. This sometimes makes us stop to see if their expectations are really what we want or are we pulled to it because of what it’s said we should or must do.

Attitude

Sometimes we wear these masks that cause us in the long run to lose sight of ourselves. We no longer know who we are but just go along with the flow. At what point do we notice what is happening and return to our authentic self? Actually do we even want to go back to that person or continue to pretend so as to fit in with the perception of reality. But if we don’t go back to being who we are do we ever feel as we should, grounded and connected.

Why be true to ourselves? What will we achieve? When we do get to that place of authenticity will we gain that connection with ourselves that allow us to be grounded?

Pushing ourselves to be more authentic will lead us to a place of peace. Remember this isn’t for anyone else but yourself. When we are able to point ourselves in the right direction then it makes us feel more fulfilled and give us the ability to weather the ebbs and flows of life. Being true to one’s self is not something that you do when you think about it. It has to be a part of you. It has to be intentional and we never stop because it’s not popular with others. As I always say it’s about you and no one else. At no point in time should other determine how you life pans out. Remember at the end of the day you have to be true to you because if you are not who will be?
