“Great things happen to those who don’t stop believing, learning, trying, and being grateful.” – Roy T. Bennett
Recently, someone sent this quote to me, and I know from personal experience that this is true. So true. It encompasses everything that makes life worth living. How can we stop believing? We have to believe in that higher being and ourselves. When we stop believing in either, I can tell you things are sure to go south. Not believing is like allowing yourself to sink slowly but surely into a state of depression. Life has its twists and turns, and nothing is for certain. As I have said before and will say again, it’s the journey, even more than the destination, that’s important. We have to hold on to belief, continue learning, never stop trying, and practice gratitude in order to get to a better place where you can grow and can stop and take advantage of opportunities.
As I wrote in a blog not so long ago, we can never stop learning. I’m not saying we will always be in school, but there is so much to learn. If we stop learning, we are sure to become dinosaurs. That’s not something that I want to happen to me. What about you? In this day and age, we have to be lifelong learners. Learning, as I said, doesn’t mean we are perpetually in school but that we open our minds to all that is available. We learn from our experiences, our mistakes, and from the mistakes of others. I especially prefer learning from others’ mistakes as they show me what the options are, and I don’t have to make the same mistake. This notion that you have to make the mistakes and that’s the best way to learn makes no sense. That’s why we have mentors. They have been there and done it, so why reinvent the wheel? Look, listen, and learn.
We never stop learning and we never play dead. When you stop trying, it’s as if you have given up on life. As long as there is life, there is hope. Who will push for you if you don’t push for yourself? Why stop? So we might have failed at something, but that doesn’t mean we stop pushing. I have never been and will never be a perfectionist, as that’s an impossibility. What I do is continue trying to be the best I can be. I don’t compare myself to others, as that will lead to depression. I just show up every day and do my best because, as my mom used to tell me growing up, your best is all I ask of you. That’s the same thing I tell my children. Just strive for the best, and it’s not what someone else might decide but what you are capable of producing.
Gratitude is, as you know, my way of living my best life. There are so many things to be grateful for, and I never allow myself to forget. As my priest spoke about on Sunday, we are so focused on what we don’t have that we don’t see the magnitude of things we do have. That’s why we focus on the journey of life; it’s not about where we will ultimately end up but how we get there. It’s always said that when you are grateful for all you have and what you will receive, you tend to attract positivity and opportunities into your life.
When we combine these four elements into our lives— belief, learning, trying, and gratitude— we have the greatest potential available. We have to hold on to the belief that life will improve through our learning and holding on to gratitude.
