I’m sure we all know someone that would give you the shirt off their back because you said you needed it. I won’t promise you that that I would be willing to do that. I am very protective of myself and if that’s considered selfish then I guess I am. My mother was that type of person, she would give away and then wonder how we would make it🤔. She however sometimes knew how to draw the line in the sand and not allow you to cross it. No matter how you pushed she wouldn’t budge. It was rare but sometimes she stood her ground.
I know someone that is one of the persons that no matter what they would give you everything they own. The person doesn’t have much but always finds it in their heart to give and give some more. Literally giving until it hurts. Are you like this person or do you have boundaries? Does it make sense giving and then doing without? Or are you the one that says, “God will provide.” Interestingly for many he does. Does it happen depending on the strength of your belief? It doesn’t seem to happen for all. Why is it that some persons are provided for and others not so much? I always wonder why life is the way it is. Life not fair at all. But what to do? As the saying goes “it is what it is.”
I think it interesting that at this time of the year is when we are tempted to give more. I wonder why? Is it because it’s Christmas and we have that feeling? Is it guilt because at this time we seem to see that we have so much to be grateful for while many don’t. Do you give because of guilt or because it’s the right thing to do? How do you give? Is it to the church so that they can help the less fortunate? Is it to charities so as to ensure that the less fortunate are taken care of? What happens throughout the rest of the year?
Thinking on this I wonder if it’s just habit. We have made this time of year the time that we give back more. Can we create a new habit to push ourselves to give more at other times of the year? Do we really want to, it would mean that we would no longer look at this time of year as special. Is it the Christmas holiday that’s special or is it the sentimental feeling behind it? Do we really need a special time to give back or do we do it because it’s the right thing to do? The person that I mentioned that gives because they think and know it’s the right thing to do would say give no matter when or how. One day I saw them and they were saying things were tight but I saw them giving a beggar money not so long after. Are you that kind of person? Do you give because it’s right and good or do you give because it’s expected?
