Saw the captioned on the back of a car while driving recently and thought it should be a saying that is placed all over. This is what should be on billboards. So many persons need to understand that staying humble must be a thing. I have personally seen persons that believe their own hype and think they have arrived and therefore are no longer what we might call humble. It’s interesting to see them fall and are humbled by the universe. It’s as if they don’t understand that humility allow one to be authentic. Not appear to be but to really be authentic. When you are authentic you are true to yourself and others. You don’t pretend to be what you are not but show a true reflection of the humble you. “It is no great thing to be humble when you are brought low; but to be humble when you are praised is a great and rare attainment.” – St Bernard
Staying humble shows that you are willing to learn and don’t know it all. Have you ever tried talking to someone who knows it all and is so arrogant? It’s not a pleasant feeling. They very often are narcissistic and can make your life unbearable in too many aspects. “To be humble to superiors is a duty, to equals courtesy, to inferiors nobleness.” – Sir Thomas Moore.
It’s important to be a constant learner, you can’t sit back and expect to know all that is happening. Thinking you do is a fallacy. You have to open your mind and the only way to do that is to accept the fact that you don’t know everything. When you have the mindset that there is so much out there to learn you are humble and willing to learn. You are therefore more likely to go after new experiences and gain more knowledge. When you are on this path you grow personally and professionally.
My mother always told me to be kind to people and it shouldn’t matter who they are and where they are in life. You can’t be humble and look down on others. There has to be respect for all and it takes a humble person to be able to do that. As we show that respect and empathy we ensure others are respectful to us.
